Gule Wan Kulu

The “Gule Wan Kulu” or “Big Dance” are a group of people who organize in graveyards after hours to evoke the spirits of the deceased. They are a secret group and as you can tell by the pictures below, their costumes are meant to conceal their identity. They are a secret society of sorts, and most commonly found in the southern region of Malawi in the Chewa tribes. They provoke fear in young ones because of their mystery and extremely wild dances combined with their lavish costumes.

The only other experience I’ve had outside of the pictures you see below resulted in me almost getting my head smashed in with a maraca, needless to say I didn’t get any pictures of that. These are the shots I got during my Peace Corps swearing in ceremony. Enjoy.
